Apple社員は、オフィスビルに大工が現れると、何か大きなことが始まることを知る。新しい壁がすばやく立てられる。ドアが追加され新しいセキュリティー手順が導入される。以前透明だった窓はスリガラスに変わる。窓の全くない部屋もある。そこはロックダウンルームと呼ばれる。一切の情報が理由なく出入りすることがない。

騒ぎは社員を動揺させる。何が動きているか、まずわからないし尋ねることもない。自分に明かされていないことは、自分には文字通り何の関係もない。さらに、工事前そこへ入ることのできたIDカードが、使えなくなっている。臆測できるのは、新しい極めて機密性の高いプロジェクトが進行中であり、自分はその内情を知らないということ。ただそれだけだ。
